Wellington-Christmas Clang
Now this time of the year can be very
busy but the serenity at the range was
just the tonic. With a storm blowing
through on Friday the temperature was
cool and the air fresh. Brad had planned
another challenge but stayed home to aid
his recovery. Mark the target master had
recreated some of our steel target shapes
to overlay on the shot out 300y target.
With the muzzleloading commitments
finished for the moment, a change from
the standard scoring target to a “steel”
replica was the go. So, we had a “clanging” challenge.
It was a relaxed start on Saturday morning with 5 shooters taking to the line
with not a muzzleloader in sight. We
opted for a 600 yard challenge and set
up on the club mound. With the rain the
less vehicle traffic the better on the
range.
The first target was a version of the stop
sign. The centre circle was scored a 1.1,
the black area was counted as steel and
scored 1, the outer white was a miss.
Sharon amused herself by playing a
clanging sound when the “steel” was hit.
We had 3 convertible sighters and 10 for
score.
Despite the range being slashed, random
tall bright green weeds seemed to pop up
from time to time as the rain soaked in.
Conditions were very pleasant but warming up, it was breezy and the mirage was
there as always. Ken H topped the score
with a solid 8. Dan was settling back into
his cartridge rifle, no hang time, after not
using it since January. He happily lay on
that mat all weekend.
We then had an early lunch as it been
quite warm in the sun. The news since
last month was Brad’s bicep repair surgery, Keith was home from Nepal, Richard & Julie were Christmas function-ing,
Dan had finished harvest, Gabby has
had surgery too, Gavin was still at work,
Peter was concreting and Paul was moving house. We are a busy bunch.
Mark had again opted for target duty and
so we set up with the “steel” diamond
target. Everyone loves a diamond, that
huge square that magically gets so
skinny when turned on the tip. With
this in mind, we decided to score the inner white a 3, the black a 2 and the
outer white a 1.
It was sunny with a nice breeze with a
switching mirage and became more overcast during the afternoon. The diamond
was doing it’s thing. Ken B was working
on not shooting a group at 10 o’clock,
maybe it is a left-handed thing but that
is his spot. Scores were ticking over.
For the next distance we continued with
the diamond- no sighters. There was lots
of “clanging”.
God bless Black Powder!
