The
Balanced
Load...
By Zack Taylor
Not everyone is interested in or able to shoot beyond 600 yards and 800
yards is where long range
begins and extends to 1,000
yards on six foot square paper
targets. The article is for LONG
RANGE TARGET SHOOTING
and much of it will apply to other Black Powder Cartridge Ri昀氀e
shooting as well. I am writing
for Long Range Competition.
It should go without saying that
e昀昀ective internal barrel fouling control must be practiced
throughout a string of 昀椀re
regardless of existing weather
variables. Generally speaking, Long Range Target is shot
in the open. A string of 昀椀re
is either ten or 昀椀fteen record
shots plus sighting shots. How
you accomplish e昀昀ective fouling
control depends upon choices
the individual shooter makes for
their ri昀氀e and load.
The Holy Grail search for long
range shooting is the smallest
vertical dispersion of shots at
the varying distances. Some
say two minutes vertical is good
enough. Others obtain under
one minute vertical and that
comes with a lot of lead down
range and some real personal e昀昀ort to reach that level of
46
marksmanship. The 45-70
does well and a lot of shooters
use the 45-90.
Paying attention to what the
successful Long Range shooters
do to win at distance is a good
way to get started and keep
up with changing trends and
equipment as you travel this
road. Otherwise, success boils
down to what the shooter does
and how well they develop their
individual skills over time in the
process. Shooting well is basically a mental discipline where
the shooter exercises the fundamentals correctly to be successful.
To start down this road I will
talk about the balanced load
and that load is shooter exclusive. Basically, a load that
will score at the target at the
varying distances of 800, 900
and 1,000 yards commensurate with the shooters’ ability
to aim and release the individual shots for the duration of a
competition. A competition can
be as little as part of one day
or most of seven consecutive
days. The longer the competition, the more shooter fatigue
a昀昀ects outcomes.
Money bullet designs and
Creedmoor bullet dsigns hav
e worked well. Your 昀椀red targets will inform you as to what
bullet design is best for you to
develop. Several top shooters
started with the modern Lyman 457132 design. To shoot
good scores you need to shoot
good bullets. Alloy mixes of one
part tin to 20 parts lead or even
16 parts lead to tin. Sixteen or
