Today started it out badly for us.
We got the trucks loaded and left
the house, got to the range in good
time, and set everything up. We
were shooting first relay at target
72. Jimbo was going to shoot first,
and I was spotting. When the fire
command was given, he went to
load his rifle and discovered he had
brought the wrong ammunition.
45–100 ammo does not fit in a
45–90 chamber! Jimbo would have
to take a DNF on his first scorecard.
We changed our positions and I
started shooting. I had not had
time to load ammo for this match
so I was shooting ammunition left
over from last year. The first load
I tried was my 542 grain money
bullet load. I had never been very
happy with that load last year and
so I hadn’t used it in any matches.
I was getting some kind of weird
vertical stringing. We had shots
going either high or low that we
couldn’t explain. I finished up my
first string of fire and Jim decided
to run back to the house and get
the correct ammunition his rifle. I
asked him to grab one of my other
boxes of ammo. I would pull targets
alone while he made the 45 minute
round-trip to the house and back.
We got to our second string of fire,
thinking to settle down a bit. Neither one of us shot especially well,
but we were relaxed and having
fun. In the end, that’s the reason
we’re doing this. You can’t expect to
be competitive in every match that
you attend. The trick is to take away
the lessons that present themselves.
Tomorrow is another match. 600
yards. We will be double checking
our gear before leaving the house!
