Neil at CPA and told him of my
idea to have a slot cut under the
recoil pad of the rifle and to install
an AirTag in it. That way, even if
somebody threw away the case of a
stolen rifle, the rifle itself would still
have a tracking device in it. Pulling
off a butt pad and getting rid of that
AirTag would be very problematic
for a crook who smashed a window,
stole a rifle, and probably didn’t
have tools with him anyway.
Lucid Airtag installed in a piece of test walnut.
So my new CPA rifle is now a test
mule. The AirTag is installed in
the buttock cushioned by a cotton
patch. This rifle is chambered in
45–100 and my load features 590
grain DDPP bullets. The recoil
will be substantial. This is the rifle
I will be shooting at the Quigley,
the Creedmoor, the Mile Match,
and hopefully at Big Whiskey this
year. I figured that if it survived all
thing he asked was “did I have a
tracking device in the vehicle?”, and
I had to answer no. He took my
report and I never heard from him
again. I had his phone number, and
I tried checking in via text message
and phone call. I never received
any answer. Apple AirTags retail for
about $20 each.
In the week leading up to the 2026
Desert International, I was thinking about the Apple AirTags and
the new rifle I had received from
CPA Rifles. I was not going to be
shooting that rifle at this match
since I didn’t have ammo loaded
for it. I kept thinking about the size
of an Apple AirTag and how cool it
would be to have one installed actually inside the rifle. I got out the
new rifle and pulled the buttstock
off and compared it to the AirTag.
A bright idea hit me and I texted
Slot cut for the Airtag in the butt of the CPA. The blue object in the
stock is a 16 oz. mercury recoil reducer.
God bless Black Powder!
