no “substitute” for
Genuine Black Powder.
Beautiful day at the Quigley, 2025
The idea for a black powder
only newsletter hadn’t crossed
my mind all that much until
recently. I mean, it had popped
up from time to time, but I’d
move on to other thoughts relatively quickly. I have a day job
running commercial construction crews (drywall), and a side
gig with my YouTube channel
“Recoil Therapy Channel”.
Plus, I’m going to be moving
soon. I have plenty of things
to keep myself occupied. Then
the current paper edition of a
popular black powder magazine hit my mailbox.
I read through the pages and
let them fester in my mind.I
thought about how things
might look if I was running
that magazine. I would want
a whole lot more current information than what typically
makes it into print. We for sure
need lots of current shooting
match re-caps delivered in a
4
timely manner, as well as entry
forms for upcoming matches.
I also want meaningful input
from industry insiders talking
about issues that a昀昀ect their
businesses and causes and
product builds that they are
passionate about. The newsletter also needs to be tied to a
Facebook page where enthusiasts can meet and discuss
topics presented and upcoming
events.
Occasionally, we may throw
in some surprise content like
loading black powder for pistols, or a current hunting story
where black powder was the
loading of choice.
We will also lean heavily into
.22 BPCR shooting. This will
be the only smokeless shooting
that gets any coverage in this
newsletter. We do not condone
the use of any so-called “substitute” black powder. There is
Above all, the information
must be presented in a way
that makes it accessible to the
new shooter looking to get into
BPCR (they are out there!), and
at the same time must provide
value to someone with more
experience. This sport has
su昀昀ered a major decline over
many years now. It started
when some of the old match directors moved on and some of
the matches dried up and then
was accelerated when the NRA
decided that they no longer had
any interest in promoting black
powder.
When organizations and media make the choice to ignore
black powder match shooting,
they are promting the idea that
there is none going on. People
start to think of black powder
as a “dead or dying” sport. It’s
a false narritive. No one I have
spoken to in the last 昀椀ve years
is of a mind to quit the sport.
Instead, they’re meeting and
talking and plotting ways to
grow BPCR back into what it
once was, maybe even better.
This newsletter is another part
of that new foundation being
laid. We don’t need “help from
outside” to do it either.
We are the ones we’ve
been waiting for. We are
the only ones we need.
We are the ones who will
ensure that BPCR does
not give up its soul and go
quietly into the night. God
Bless.
