Emails from the Quigley

S a t u r d a y ,
Our relay started on target number
five which is the small rectangle.
The conditions this morning are
cool with overcast skies and a wind.
It’s running 15 miles an hour in
gusts. In my first target I scored five
points. The first shot was a miss
which I immediately corrected for
and the remaining shots were going
well, except for when I got in a hurry and tried to rush two more shots
later in the string. That cost me a
total of three misses for that stage.
D a y
with me. Having a great rifle and
a great load doesn’t do you any
good if you don’t practice. If I want
to improve on this type of performance, then I need to be practicing
several times a month.
Our third target was the 805
yard Buffalo. We ended up with a
twitchy wind situation and I had
two flyers that went high over the
back hump of the Buffalo. We didn’t
have a good explanation for those
and I ended up with three points on
the Buffalo. Not a good day so far…
We then went to the off-hand target. Our station was the last offhand Luckily, the stop sign is coming up
and we should be able to get some
target in the row. I did not score
points there.

I’m looking at this as proof that my
lack of practice time is catching up News flash… I scored four on the

Early this morning there was a very
light amount of rain. Enough to
keep the dust down! Today should
be an excellent day. I got plenty of
sleep and we headed back to the
range. In spite of yesterday‘s performance I’m in a pretty good mood
and I feel like things can be turned
around today. Our first target today
is a 530 yard big rectangle. This is
another fairly easy target on the
range.
Things started off fairly well, but in
the end, I scored five out of eight.
It’s an OK score but not great. My
total right now is 17 hits out of 40
total targets. Less than 50% it’s hard
not to be discouraged by this.
Our final Tiger of the match is

stop sign. The wheels are coming
off. This is the easiest target on the
entire range. I think what I’m seeing is a lack of practice time manifesting itself. I haven’t had time to
shoot since I was at the desert international. I fired a total of 25 rounds
between the end of that match and
coming to the Quigley. Shooting is
a perishable skill.
Still, tomorrow is another day and I
have a chance to do well and at least
salvage some self-respect.

the 405 yard diamond. This is the
toughest target on the range except
for the offhand, but I normally do
well at this target. Weather conditions are good with only a very light
breeze. In the end, I scored only
three out of eight. My total score for
this Quigley is 20 targets hit out of
48 total.
As I noted in yesterday‘s email, I
truly believe that this is the result
of a lack of practice. Shooting isn’t
like riding a bike. You may know
how to do it, but that doesn’t mean
that you can do it. I spend a lot of
money to go to these matches and
while I have fun at each one with
all the great friends that I’m with,
I need to spend more time during
the entire rest of the year practicing

if I want this to be worth it.
One final note… I drove out out of
the Quigley headed home early on
Monday morning and managed to
leave my shooting sticks behind.
The nice lady at the Airbnb called
me up and we made a deal that
she will store my sticks until next
year since I already have the house
reserved anyway. I don’t need them
for the rest of the year, but it just
kind of shows how things went.
