The Cody Prize is awarded to the competitor who shoots the
highest score for 50 shots with unlimitted sighters fired from the
prone or seated position at 100 yards. This cross stick event
takes place on Friday 1/22/27
William Frederick Cody (1846–1917), also known as Buffalo Bill,
was a prominent figure of the American Old West whose life
encompassed various roles, from soldier and buffalo hunter to
showman and advocate. His legacy extends far beyond his
lifetime, profoundly influencing the popular image of the
American frontier.
Early life and experiences

Born in Le Claire, Iowa, in 1846,
Cody's early life was shaped by the
challenges of the American frontier.

Following his father's death, at age
11, he took on various jobs to
support his family, including
working with a freight company,
herding cattle, and driving wagon
trains across the Great Plains.
•
He also reportedly rode for the
Pony Express as a teenager and
participated in the gold rush in
Colorado.
•
During the American Civil War, he
served as a Union scout and later
enlisted in the 7th Kansas Cavalry
Regiment.
•
After the war, he earned the
nickname "Buffalo Bill" by hunting
buffalo to supply meat to railroad
workers, reportedly killing over
4,000 buffalo in 18 months.
