The Jacoby Prize is awarded to the competitor who
shoots the highest score for 50 shots. 50 shots with
unlimitted sighting shots will be fired at 100 yards. This
offhand event takes place on Sunday 1/24/27.
Philo Jacoby: Pioneer, Journalist, and Champion Marksman
Philo Jacoby (1837-1922) was a multifaceted figure in 19th and
early 20th century San Francisco, known for his journalism,
athletic prowess, and strong civic engagement.
Early life and career

Born in Lauenberg, Pomerania (now
part of Poland) in 1837, the son of a
rabbi.
•
Trained as a printer and studied at the
naval school in Danzig.
•
Served in the merchant marines of
England, Prussia, and the United
States.
•
Arrived in San Francisco in 1859 and
opened a printing office.
•
Established The Hebrew, a prominent
Jewish newspaper in San Francisco,
in 1863. The paper ran for 70 years,
until 1923.
•
His publications promoted Jewish Americanization and
advocated for the Union cause during the Civil War.
