Wellington-Winter Warmth
Unlike our first visit in June 2025, it was
very mild for Winter with near perfect
black powder shooting conditions over
most of the weekend. Diffuse light, just
enough breeze to move the smoke away,
not much mirage, good company, plenty
of laughs, the odd sledge, coffee….
Numbers were a little light due to our
members spreading their wings. Gavin &
Peter are in Montana USA for the Quigley
and Brad worked the weekend so he &
Kellie can travel to SA next weekend for
the BPCR Silhouette Nationals. They will
join Con, Shayne and Dan who are also
attending. Safe travels and good luck
everyone.
Preparations for LRBP Nationals continued with Jim procuring timber for frames
and Mark the manufacturer on the tools
making new frames while we shot.
Detail 1 started strong on the deceptive
300 yards, 3 convertible sighters and 10
for score. Two shooters kept all sighters
and two kept one on the way to some
tidy scores, Shayne with a nice 39.1 with
the Gibbs. Detail 2 kept more sighters
and powered through keeping Dan moving with his Gibbs. John was concerned
that Richard’s loads seemed rather “delicate” compared to his normal tendency
to stoke things up. Saving his shoulder
and/or his wallet?
We then moved to the 500 yards. It was
the first time in a while we have shot this
distance. It is a nice distance, big target
and not too far away, at least that is
what we told ourselves. Detail 1 cranked
out some good scores, and it was very
enjoyable laying in the sun. Sharon was
happy with her first ever V bull too. We
then had our lunch break, we would
have been starving if we had waited any
longer.
Detail 2 were soon set up after the break
and hitting plenty of 4s. Keith was on a
run of 4s and mentioned he would like to
try for another one, Dan told him to try
to hit a V bull….so he did, and so did
Dan. Keith and Dan both finishing on
40.1. Have we mentioned that Keith
likes his new bullet mold?
The Friday crew had the place ready to
roll when the Saturday “locals” wheeled
in. It was a relaxed start at the 300
yards and Janette kindly volunteered to
score while Sharon shot. Jim sat on a
scope with her and showed her the ropes
for this type of target. Thanks Jim.
