The Long Range Match
On behalf of Recoil Therapy Channel, I have given my
Sasquatch target a new foster
home at the Big Whiskey range.
The Squatch will become a regular feature at the match. It sits
482 yards from the 昀椀ring line. It
has two swingers, there’s a brain
swinger and a gut swinger. It’s
been out昀椀tted with the LED
lights that all the other targets
have. The other targets in order
are the elk, the Jackalope, the
Bu昀昀alo, the wolf and the moving IPSC target, which is shot
o昀昀 hand. It moves back-andforth on metal tracks, 200 yards
from the 昀椀ring line. None of
the targets are easy to hit. The
Sasquatch will end up becoming
the sixth target.
The load that I’m running in the 45–90 is one of the
go-to loads that a lot of people
use. It’s the Bu昀昀alo Arms 540
grain M3 bullet mold, which is a
money bullet with the 昀椀rst driving band reduced so that it seats
into the lands of the ri昀氀ing, with
83 grains of 2F Swiss Powder
and a federal 210 M match
primer. I’m using two .060 inch
wads. The compression wad is
a 昀椀ber wad, and the wad seated
over the top of the compression wad is an LDPE wad. The
most important thing about my
ri昀氀e is that it has a new barrel.
My old 45–90 barrel has been
retired. It was a good barrel, but
the chamber on it was reamed
with a SAAMI spec reamer and
it was a bit loose. It tended to let
the brass blow out .008’ above
the case web and that’s not con-

ducive to the ultimate top end
accuracy that I want. The new
barrel has a Shiloh spec chamber.
So far, this barrel has
102 rounds through it. It’s a
Lilja 昀椀ve groove, 16 twist barrel.
In conjunction with the Shiloh
chamber, it’s delivering outstanding accuracy. I’m easily
able to hit all of the long-range
targets at big whiskey with this
combination. Today was the
long-range match at big whiskey. The course of 昀椀re is two
sighter shots and then 昀椀ve shots
for score at each of 昀椀ve targets.
In order, the targets are the Elk
at 540 yards, the Jackalope at
630 yards, the Bu昀昀alo at 1055
yards, the Wolf at 690 yards,
and the moving IPSC target at
