are 10 animals at each station.
You 昀椀re them in two groups of
昀椀ve. Your 昀椀rst bank of 昀椀ve animals gets a seven-minute time
limit for unlimited sighters, and
then 昀椀ve shots for score. Your
total time limit is seven minutes so you can shoot as many
sighters as you want but you
better save time to shoot those
昀椀ve record shots. As soon as a
shooter declares to his spotter
that he’s going for score there
are no more sighter shots. There
are also no “convertible sighter” shots. A convertible sighter
is when a shooter is taking his
sight-in shots and hits an animal and decides to declare that
he’s going for score and take
that 昀椀rst hit and run with it.
I’ve heard of some places allowing this, but personally, I don’t
think I’ve ever seen it in action.
The fact that they don’t allow
this at Big Whiskey suits me just
昀椀ne.
The match at Big Whiskey is two days. There are 40
record shots on both days, thus,
the overall possible score is 80.
God Bless Black Powder!
With that seven minute and
then 昀椀ve minute time limit on
your animals, everything becomes of crucial importance.
We practice fouling control
in black powder shooting. At
silhouette matches, blow-tubing is probably the most common method of fouling control
and the second most common
I would say is the use of the
Bu昀昀alo Arms bore wiper system. There are people such as
myself who are running patches,
but we were de昀椀nitely in the
minority. One minute for each
shot. Sounds like a long time
until you start doing that with
black powder. By the time you
extract your 昀椀red case, run your
fouling control, dry out your
chamber, and then chamber
another round and get the next
wind call from your spotter, that
minute can go by awful quick.
Several times during this match
I found myself becoming frustrated running patches because
they’re at times di昀케cult to grab
and manipulate and get into
the chamber, especially in the
wind. I made the decision about
halfway through the second day
that for silhouette shooting I
was going to go back to using
the Bu昀昀alo Arms bore wip-
